All They Have Is Paint and Pie

Heather Bachman - November 8, 2004
President George W. Bush

Not too recently, there have been two attacks against Republicans that have of course not seen much media light. First was a personal attack on Ann Coulter and the second was a more public attack I will go into further later. First, I would like to go into the attack on Coulter. As many know, the conservative columnist was recently attacked by pies at a half-hour speaking engagement. Although I know it didn't at all touch the target personally (other than a bit in the shoulder,) it made me think of what we are really fighting against : personal attacks.

Normally when I come face to face with someone who is anti-Bush they have the same reasons : The War and The Budget. However this is with only a few I find who have researched what they believe are balanced sources. The greatest response usually stands alone : The Stupidity of the man. "Bush is an idiot" is the answer I get most of the time, and that's what they are standing against.

Not only verbal, but also visual attacks have come to my attention. Recently some Jersey residents have had their Pro-Bush yard signs painted over by public deviants. The phrase, "Are we in the third grade?" comes to mind because this is the most childish reaction I have seen.

Ladies and gentleman, remember who you are. Not only Democrats, Republicans and undecideds but also Americans. People who have freedoms others only dream about and never experience, including the freedom to chose who you want to support and who you want to protect you.

This is an immense freedom that also has responsibility : To respect others' choices. Of course, you can retort in discussions and debate but there is a line that can be easily crossed and has been in these examples.

Neither persons nor personal property should be put in danger when you respond to someone's views. The only result of those actions is anger. And as we have seen in so many recent and not so recent tragedies, anger never has a positive result.
